The first diet soft drink, a ginger ale, was introduced in 1952 and was originally coined and marketed as a “No-Cal Beverage.” In 1959, the first diet cola entered the market. Since this time, there have been significant developments in the diet soft drink industry including the introduction of a large variety of diet products, as well as continuing improvements in taste and sweetener profiles of low-calorie beverages. Diet soft drinks continue to grow in popularity, especially in today’s calorie-conscious society.
According to the Calorie Control Council, 36 percent of U.S. adults say they are interested in additional diet soft drink products entering the market and being made available for consumers. Many companies have answered this increased demand with new product formulations to meet the needs and satisfy the palates of diet soft drink consumers.
